On Sunday, Twitter announced it had permanently banned U.S. Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene’s (R-GA) personal account. The social media giant says that Greene repeatedly violated their policy on Covid-19 misinformation, prompting its decision. She is the first member of Congress to have an account that Twitter has permanently banned. Greene’s official congressional account remains active, though it has 75,000 followers less than her now-banned personal account. Greene blasted the decision on the messaging app Telegram, stating, “Twitter is an enemy to America and can't handle the truth,” and the platform “can't stop the truth from being spread far and wide.” On Monday, Facebook suspended her personal account for 24 hours, but said permanently removing the account was “beyond the scope of [its] policies.”

Representative Greene is no stranger to controversy regarding her social media posts. Before she was a congresswoman, Greene voiced support for several conspiracy theories, including Q-Anon claims and suggesting a space laser deliberately started California wildfires, though she has since distanced herself from those comments. Twitter temporarily suspended her account last January following her allegations of widespread voter fraud in the 2020 presidential election. In February 2021, the 11 Republican House members joined all Democrats to strip her from her committee assignments, alleging she had supported statements of violence against Democratic politicians. After an outcry from congressional leadership last June, Greene publicly apologized for comparing Covid-19 mask and vaccination mandates to the Holocaust. Twitter temporarily suspended her account in June and August of 2021, saying her tweets violated its policy against Covid-19 misinformation.

Left Narrative

Representative Greene has a long history of bigoted remarks and lies. Congressional Republican leadership – especially House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy – have been helplessly inept at addressing the hatred within their caucus, allowing Greene to make increasingly outlandish claims. She often makes these false allegations to her hundreds of thousands of followers, potentially costing lives. Twitter’s decision to permanently ban her personal account is long overdue and is a responsible use of its moderation powers.

The Left often likes to bring up what Marjorie Taylor Greene has said in the past as an excuse to censor what she says in the present. Although many Republicans disagree with her previous statements, her comments on the 2020 election and Covid are mainstream. Twitter has just banned a sitting Representative for citing NIH research on VAERS data, a move that diminishes the voice of those who elected her. What we have seen this week is a continuation of cancel culture. Twitter continues to ban those who post Covid facts and data they dislike. What does a Twitter moderator know more than the NIH and the discoverer of mRNA vaccines? Marjorie Taylor Greene, Brandon Brown, Dr. Robert Malone, and eventually Joe Rogan are just more names on a long list of censored “dissenters.”
