Amtrak is a government subsidized passenger railroad service and one of the largest public transportation systems in the United States.

In 1970, President Richard Nixon signed the Rail Passenger Service Act (RPSA), creating the National Railroad Passenger Corporation, later known as Amtrak, to take over the intercity passenger rail obligations belonging to private railroads. Funding for Amtrak has been decreasing since 2010. However, Congress passed a $66 billion funding bill in 2021, marking a 4,665% increase in funding since FY2016.
